The camshafts in Volkswagen vehicles are rotating shafts in their engines. What they do is activate the spring-loaded intake and exhaust valves for each cylinder using lifters, and they do it in time with the pumping of engine pistons and the firing of spark plugs. An engine can have one that works all the valves or separate ones for each. For instance, engines with overhead camshafts have separate ones for each cylinder bank, so V-configurations, such as in V6 or V8 engines, can have either two or four camshafts.

If such symptoms are ignored, camshaft breakage and extensive crankshaft and cylinder head damage can result, not to mention damage to other engine parts. If you see them, inspect the camshaft, and do one of two things: either machine your old camshaft or replace it. The latter is advisable. When you buy a new one, though, choose the genuine article.
