The Volkswagen Beetle was a compact car inspired by an early 20th-century VW prototype called Type 82E. That model debuted in 1938 and was offered until 2003, but if you're driving a Beetle these days, there's a good chance it's one of two types made between 1998 and 2019. One was the Volkswagen New Beetle, which came out in 1997, and the other was the Volkswagen Beetle (A5), which released in 2012. They've both been offered in coupe, convertible, and hatchback body styles over the years.

Early on, the model came in base and TDI trims, and you could get either a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gas or a 1.9-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine, depending on trim. In 1999, GL, GLS, and GLX trims were offered, as was a 1.8-liter gas engine. The 2001 model year brought with it a Sport trim, followed in 2002 by a Turbo S trim and in 2005 by a GLS TDI trim. 2006 made 2.5 and TDI trims available, the former with a 2.5-liter, five cylinder engine, and in 2008, you could get an S or an SE trim.

Skip ahead to 2012, and base and Turbo trims would become available, as would turbocharged engines and a choice among five- or six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, or six-speed dual-clutch (DCT) transmissions. Features that year ranged from alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof to Fender premium audio and a rear spoiler. You could even get brushed-aluminum pedal covers.

Its final year, the model came in S, SE, Final Edition SE, and Final Edition SEL trims. Features included a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rain-sensing windshield wipers, not to mention keyless ignition, bi-Xenon headlights, and LED daytime running lights and taillights.
